The Cats breathe!

A Jake Reed hat-trick has resurrected Geelong's season as they put the Saints under the pump. St Kilda was rolled for just 50 in its first innings at Geelong after Saints' skipper Graeme Rummans won the toss and batted. After losing Damon Rowan early and, with the score at 1/21, Reed knocked over Tom Moffat (13) bowled, Graeme Rummans (0) caught by Josh McDonald and Andrew McGuinness (0) bowled to complete the season's third hat-trick. Ironically the other two were achieved by St Kilda bowlers Dan Mueller and Lachlan Graf.

The St Kilda innings never recovered as Marc Carson (2/23), Cam Alford (2/8) and Dom McGlinchey (2/2) ripped through the lower order to bundle the Saints out for 50, the second-lowest total for the season after the Hawks' miserable 39 last week against Casey-South Melbourne.

Geelong replied with 9/203 declared, with Hayden Butterworth (74) and skipper Luke Muller (35) top-scoring. Debutant Shea Gribben (3/23) did best for the Saints. Veteran right-arm quick Marc Carson then removed Rowan, Moffat and Forbes quickly and the Saints will resume next Saturday on 3/35, still 118 behind.

Prahran posted a very creditable 7/319 against ladder-leaders Melbourne at Toorak Park. Unveiling their new electronic scoreboard, the True Blues' main contributors were Nick Morrey (72), Dimitri Mascarenhas (41) and Steve Seymour (83no). For the Demons, Jack Paynter (3/41) was the pick of the bowlers.

Ringwood, with tons to Tom Stray (162no) and Ian Holland (102) recovered from 2/18 to post a commanding 6/352 declared against Camberwell Magpies. The Pies will resume on 0/7 next week. The third wicket stand of 226 between Stray and Holland was a club record, surpassing the previous mark of Matthew King and Sean Flynn against Prahran in 2007-08. It was Stray's fifth (and highest) Premier ton and Holland's second.

Footscray Edgewater scored a competitive 8/320 against Richmond at Central Reserve. Surrey import Arun Harinath scored a fine 138 to provide the backbone for the innings.

In a fascinating match at Frankston, Carlton reached 178 with Nick Ross (61) and Nathan Pilon (37) top-scoring. Chris McCormick (5/44) registered his best Premier figures for the Heat, which resumes on 0/24 next week.

Hawthorn-Monash Uni has responded well after last week's catastrophes to hold the upper hand against Essendon at Windy Hill. After bowling the Bombers out for 117 (Ben MacRae 37, Daniel Rogers 3/28, Simon Black 3/33), the Hawks reached 3/108 by the close. Jake Marnie (45) and Liam Tonkin (30) top-scored.

North Melbourne (3/89) possibly has its nose slightly in front after rolling Northcote for 211. Exciting young East Ballarat batsman Matt Short (37) top-scored for the Dragons but, despite paynter_bowls_r18_v_prahnumbers two to nine all scoring between 17 and 37, none went on to register a big score. Eric Ghasperidis (38no) will resume next week.

Similarly Casey-south Melbourne may be looking down the barrell after being rolled for 203 against the Students at Casey Fields. Melbourne Uni's attack of Brett Harrop (4/58), Mark Stafford (3/39) and Greg Kennedy (2/55) did the damage, with only Richard Jones (75no) and Rohan Blandford (43) scoring decent runs for the Swans. Uni resumes on 3/84 next Saturday, with a tense first session assured.

At Schramms Reserve Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell won the toss and batted but, despite his own 46, the Panthers battled against a steady Fitzroy Doncaster attack. Steve Duckworth (4/26) and Chris Moore (42) did best. The Lions resume on 2/66 next week. It will be another critical first session for both sides.
