Students, Lions in....Blues, Panthers out

The Students and the Lions are back in the eight at the expense of Carlton and Dandenong tonight. Geelong has beaten St Kilda outright, while Melbourne and Prahran have played out a high-scoring draw at Toorak Park.

Ringwood has wrapped up a top four finish with a hard-fought win over Camberwell Magpies. The Magpies, in reply to the Rams' 6/352 declared last week, battled hard, but at 6/140 and 8/224, the Magpies appeared to be heading towards a big loss. But Magpies' skipper Simon Hill played a lone hand, scoring 153 before he was ninth out at 256. Last pair Simon O'Brien (34) and Will Walker (21no) then added 47 before Ian Holland (4/74) took the last wicket, the Pies all out for 303. It was Hill's eighth Premier ton. Dropped on 0, he faced 193 balls and hit 17 fours and 4 sixes.

Prahran elected to bat on today for a further six overs, taking its total from 7/319 to 9/345, with Steve Seymour dismissed for 98. With 81 overs available, Melbourne could only manage 5/328 with contributions from Brenton McDonald (90no - his eighth not out of the season), Matthew Begbie (56), Matthew Brown (52), Alex Keath (42) and Andrew Kent (39). Veteran leggie Bryce McGain (2/32 from 19 overs) proved difficult to get away.

Geelong has kept itself in with a remote chance of finals action after beating St Kilda outright. The Saints resumed today on 3/35, still trailing by 118 after last week's disastrous 50. With St Kilda 6/98 and then 8/178, an outright looked assured, but an unbroken club record ninth wicket stand of 137 between Dan Mueller (87no) and Lachlan Graf (53no) enabled Rummans to declare, setting the Cats 163 to win outright from 21 overs. Geelong achieved the target, finishing at 5/164, with Meyrick Buchanan (55 off 33 balls, 5 fours, 2 sixes), James Crosthwaite (30 off 20 balls) and Hayden Butterworth (34 off 30 balls) having the chase covered.hill_r18_v_ring

Fitzroy Doncaster, Frankston Peninsula and Melbourne Uni all navigated important run-chases today to defeat Dandenong, Carlton and Casey-South Melbourne respectively. For the Lions Scott Huntley (69no) and Lloyd Mash (60) batted well; for the Heat Matthew Gapes (63no) and Matt Chasemore (43no) did best, while for the Students Mark Simpson (78) top-scored. Melbourne Uni and Fitzroy Doncaster both popped into the eight at the expense of Dandenong and Carlton.

Footscray Edgewater threw a spanner in the works for Richmond today. The Doggies, 8/320 overnight, batted on for another five overs today, declaring at 9/342, before bowling the Tigers out for 226. Apart from Daniel Sartori (84no), Andy Delmont (44) and Chris Weeks (31), the batting was disappointing against Lucas Dredge (3/70) and Wes Robinson (3/26).

North Melbourne (6/317 dec & 1/30) went close to beating Northcote outright at the Junction Oval. Eric Ghasperidis (111) and Matthew Love (50) both built up the first innings lead, but Trent Lawford (64no) continued his outstanding form blasting his half-century off just 15 balls before taking 5/51 in the Dragons' second innings. With Dragons' skipper Marcus Stoinis (67) proving obstinate, the Kangaroos were faced with the task of scoring 60 off just four overs for the outright. No prizes for guessing who opened the batting, but Lawford was run out for 10 and the Roos finished at 1/30.

Hawthorn-Monash Uni (210) had a comfortable win over Essendon (117 & 3/108) in the other game at Windy Hill. David Alleyne (53) top-scored for the Hawks, while paceman Louis Cameron (5/67) took the bowling honours for the Bombers.
