Panthers jump from 10th to 4th

From tenth to 4th, that's the Dandenong story after an outright today. Carlton left it till the last over to pop into seventh and Melbourne Uni dropped out as a result.

In an amazing topsy-turvy day of Premier Cricket, at various stages:
Dandenong jumped from tenth to fourth with an outright over Richmond,
With the Panthers at 5/47 chasing the 107 required, the Tigers were a chance to do a "Lazarus",
Melbourne Uni looked like hanging onto eighth spot for much of the day, despite losing to Essendon,
Carlton won with a Nick Austin boundary off the first ball of the last over against the Kangaroos,
St Kilda held out for a hard-fought draw against the Rams,
Footscray Edgewater thumped Casey-SM outright to finish twelfth and,
Northcote upset Geelong to record their third win of the season.

Dandenong's five-wicket outright win over Richmond at Shepley Oval has catapulted the Panthers from tenth to fourth and a home Quarter Final against St Kilda next weekend. Chasing the 107 required for maximum points, however, Dandenong was struggling at 5/47 before Steve Mullaney (65no) and James Nanopoulos (18no) knocked off the required runs.monteleone_r19

In a sensational match at Princes Park, Carlton chased down North Melbourne's 269, leaving it until the first ball of the final over before Nick Austin (28no) hit a boundary to secure a finals berth. Austin equalled his career-high score with his knock. Earlier Jake Hancock (100) put a wretched season behind him with his fourth Premier century. The day's play ebbed and flowed, with first the Blues (2/162) and then the Kangaroos (6/194 & 9/262) on top. Trent Waring (4/63) and Trent Lawford (3/83) were the best of North's bowlers.

After a tense first hour at the Albert Ground, Melbourne (153) emerged with first innings points over Frankston Peninsula (125). Batting a second time, the Heat were 3/125 (Matt Gapes 75) in their second innings when the skippers agreed to pull stumps. Ironically the two teams will clash again next weekend in a Quarter Final.

Ringwood batted on at the Junction Oval, extending their total from 9/271 to 299 all out. St Kilda was struggling at 4/70 before Damon Rowan (89) and Andrew McGuinness (71) added 132 for the fifth wicket. Ian Holland, Pat Ashton and Michael Topp all took important wickets as the Saints' chase lost momentum, the match finishing in a draw with the Saints 9/272.

Fitzroy Doncaster (3/227) efficiently chased down Camberwell Magpies' 226 to lock in sixth spot on the ladder. Matt Bremner (73), Tim Sheehan (73), Peter Dickson (34no) and Lloyd Mash (28no) had no trouble knocking off the runs.

Footscray Edgewater (6/277 dec) finished the season on a high with an outright win over Casey-South Melbourne (76 & 121). Former WA bat Wes Robinson (141no & 5/16 for the match) was the outstanding Doggies player.

It was a positive finish to a long season for Essendon and Northcote, knocking off Melbourne Uni and Geelong respectively. Bombers' quick Louis Cameron (6/45) did a demolition job on the Students' batsmen, whilst Ben Holt (3/38), Chas Keogh (3/61) and Tim Monteleone (2/31) crunched the Cats' finals hopes.muller_bowled_r19

Prahran's dynamic duo Bryce McGain (5/23) and Rhys Adams (4/29) cut a swathe through the Hawks' batting line-up, dismissing them for 141. Only Will Tavare (71) resisted for long. Following-on the Hawks were 4/134 when stumps were called. McGain's 7 wickets for the match took his season's tally to 54, whilst Rhys Adams went to 44, equal second with the Demons' Brenton McDonald.

Melbourne, St Kilda and Ringwood have qualified for the finals in all four grades, with Fitzroy Doncaster (1sts, 2nds & 3rds) next best. Casey-South Melbourne and Essendon are the only clubs without a finals presence.
